Rental Car in Sesimbra: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Extras Mean?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Do not choose a Sesimbra rental car from the daily price alone. Open the rental conditions and compare the excess, security deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy and charges for every driver. The cheapest-looking offer can be unusable at the desk if the main driver cannot provide the required card or available credit. No single deposit or young-driver rule applies to every company, so this article deliberately gives no invented universal amount.
Excess and deposit are different
The excess is the part of a covered damage or theft claim for which the renter may remain responsible under the contract. CDW limits certain collision-damage liability; it is not automatically “full insurance”, and exclusions can include parts such as tyres, glass, roof or underside. Read the individual policy rather than treating the initials as a promise.
The security deposit is money or credit the supplier blocks to cover possible charges. It is not the price of the excess, although the two amounts may be related. The European consumer guidance for Portugal says most rental companies require a deposit and that suppliers set its amount and return conditions. Check the exact figure and card rules in your offer before booking.
What happens at the counter
Confirm whose name must be on the payment card, whether debit cards are accepted and how much available credit is needed. The booking platform may be an intermediary while the desk company supplies the vehicle and contract. Read both sets of terms. An optional product sold at pickup can reduce some liability, but its price and exclusions belong to that particular supplier; never assume it duplicates or replaces cover bought elsewhere.
Before leaving, inspect the car in good light. Make sure every mark appears on the checkout document and photograph the bodywork, wheels, glass, fuel gauge and mileage. At return, follow the named location and time, keep the fuel receipt when the policy requires refilling, and ask for written confirmation of the vehicle’s condition.
Extras that change the total
Look separately for an additional driver, child seat, late collection, one-way return and young-driver terms. Minimum age and licence-holding periods vary, so the only reliable answer is in the selected offer. A “full-to-full” fuel policy means you receive and return the car full; other policies can include a fuel purchase or service charge. Do not compare two totals until the fuel arrangement and required extras match.
Also check the pickup location. Discover Cars has a Setúbal page rather than a dedicated Sesimbra page, and “near Sesimbra” does not prove that a desk is in the town. A cheap Setúbal offer may still be useful, but only if the transfer to its office fits your arrival.
A five-minute booking check
Write down the final price, excess, deposit, payment-card requirement, fuel policy and named drivers. Then note what CDW covers and excludes. If any one of those fields is unclear, ask the supplier in writing before payment. EU consumer guidance also notes that an online car booking has no automatic fourteen-day cooling-off right, so cancellation terms matter before you click.
