Cabo Espichel at Sunset From Sesimbra: By Boat, Buggy or Your Own Car?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
If you have a car, drive to Cabo Espichel yourself: the cape, the sanctuary and the dinosaur footprints cost nothing to visit. If you do not, the sunset boat trip from Sesimbra towards Cabo Espichel is the only per-person trip we found that sells a sunset on this coast by sea, at €55 per person for 2 hours. It has only 7 reviews, all five-star, so treat it as promising rather than proven.
What there is to see
Cabo Espichel is a cape in the Arrábida Natural Park, in the municipality of Sesimbra. A university page reports that 614 dinosaur footprints, about 129 million years old, were found there, between Boca do Chapim and Praia do Areia do Mastro. On top of the cliffs there are the lighthouse and the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, with the Ermida da Memória chapel. The booking pages for the jeep tours name the same sights: the sanctuary, the lighthouse and the footprints.
The cape juts out to the west, so the sun sets over open water. Calculated for the cape itself, mid-month sunset times are roughly 5:25 pm in November and 5:15 pm in December, about 6:15 pm in February, 7:00 pm in mid-October, 8:10 pm in mid-April and about 9:00 pm in June and July, with the clocks on summer time from the end of March to the end of October. Look up the exact time for your day.
Option 1: the sunset boat trip
The sunset boat trip leaves the Porto de Abrigo in Sesimbra. Its page says you go first to Ribeiro do Cavalo beach, then west to Mijona and Inferno beaches, past a bay where you learn about the region’s whaling history, to the caves and rock formations towards Cabo Espichel, and watch the sunset with a sip of a regional drink on the boat. It includes a guide, an STCW-certified crew, life jackets, insurance, snorkel masks and the park’s access fees, but not other food or drinks. Languages are Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.
Two cautions. The page lists wheelchair users as not suitable, even though the listing carries a “wheelchair accessible” label elsewhere: the label and the exclusion do not agree, so ask. And the 7 reviews are too few to say how often the sunset is clear. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is shown.
A second sunset boat trip exists, priced per group of up to 8: it costs €260 for 2 hours, includes a regional drink and has no reviews yet. Its page does not name Cabo Espichel as the sunset spot.
Option 2: the buggy at sunset
The sunset buggy tour costs €175 per group of up to 2 (the price is per buggy, not per person) and takes 2 hours from the Lapa da Granja Equestrian Center. It is not a Cabo Espichel sunset: the sunset spot is above Praia da Foz, reachable only by off-road vehicle, according to the page. The guide leads on a quad bike. It has 6 reviews, all five-star.
There is also a 2.5-hour buggy tour that goes to Cabo Espichel itself, at €170 per group of up to 2, via Praia da Foz and Sesimbra Castle. It is not sold as a sunset trip, so ask about start times if the evening is what you want.
Option 3: a jeep tour by day
If sunset is not the goal, two jeep tours cover the cape by day. The 4x4 tour to Cape Espichel costs €60, runs about 2 to 3 hours, or about 7 hours with the optional round-trip transfer from Lisbon, is limited to 10 people and is rated 4.8 from 30 reviews. Its page lists Sesimbra Castle, dinosaur footprints, Meco and wildlife-spotting in the park, and meeting points in Lisbon or Sesimbra. One reviewer, whose family ranged in age from 13 to 48, liked its balance of culture and nature. The jeep tour from Sesimbra to Cabo Espichel costs €50 for 3 hours, takes up to 12 people and has no reviews yet. It visits the castle, the sanctuary, the lighthouse and the footprints and ends at Praia da Foz.
A speedboat trip along the cliffs at €45 for 2 hours, with 3 reviews, shows the dinosaur footprints from the sea, along a long list of beaches and landmarks. It is a daytime trip.
Driving yourself
On your own, you see the cape for the price of fuel. The sources we found say there is free parking and that the sights are close enough to walk between; we did not find a current bus timetable, so if you rely on public transport, check it before you go. For a sunset, plan to be there well before it, and bring a jacket: this is an exposed headland. If you want to compare car rental for Sesimbra and Setúbal, that is the flexible way to do it, and it lets you stay as long as you like.
