Kayaking in Arrábida from Sesimbra: Which Tour Should You Book?

For most people, book the guided kayak tour in the Arrábida biosphere reserve: it is the most-reviewed kayak tour from Sesimbra, rated 4.9 from 1,309 reviews, takes a group of at most ten and costs €35 per person. The other five are not worse, they differ in details that matter to some people: how long you are on the water, whether a picnic is included, and who is turned away.

What every tour has in common

All of them paddle from Sesimbra along the coast of the Arrábida Natural Park, inside the protected Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, towards Ribeira do Cavalo beach, a stretch of coast that has no road to it. (The booking pages spell it “Ribeiro do Cavalo”; both names are in use.) You paddle double kayaks with a guide, wear a life jacket, stop on the beach for a swim and a snack, and paddle back. The sea caves and rock passages on the way are the reason to come. If you want to know what the beach is like and whether you could walk there instead, our guide to Ribeira do Cavalo by kayak or on foot covers it.

One thing the listings share and rarely say loudly: this is open-sea paddling, not a lagoon. The Ribeira do Cavalo route takes about 75 to 90 minutes each way in the itineraries we read, and one operator puts the outward trip at around 1.5 hours. Three of the six pages rule out non-swimmers, and one reviewer, who clearly enjoyed it, still called it “a workout”.

The 3-hour listings at a glance. The first two follow almost the same plan: a briefing of 10 to 15 minutes, about 75 to 85 minutes of paddling to Ribeira do Cavalo, 30 to 40 minutes on the beach, then the paddle back. The one at €31.50 is the cheapest of the group. Its page lists a double kayak with backrest and life jacket, a dry bag, personal accident insurance, water and traditional sweets as the snack, and a limit of ten people per guide. The €35 one also offers a van option, and its page recommends the morning slot if you have never kayaked, because the water is calmer in the morning. Its snack is described only as “snacks” and refillable water. Its page rules out non-swimmers, people with mobility impairments and anyone over 120 kg.

The 4-hour small-group tour. This is the one for people who want a proper lunch. Its page lists a picnic on the beach with a baguette (vegan or chicken), fruit, farinha torrada, a Sesimbra sweet, and water, and it caps groups at five double kayaks per guide. The Lisbon option, which includes a transfer from Time Out Market at Cais do Sodré, takes about 6.5 hours in total. A private version exists. It is the strictest on health: no pregnant women, no heart conditions, no reduced mobility, nobody over 110 kg, and the operator may exclude anyone who did not disclose a relevant condition, without a refund.

The tour with the longest list of exclusions. The €37 listing says it is not suitable for children under 8, pregnant women, people with back problems, mobility impairments, epilepsy, haemophilia, recent surgery or a low level of fitness, nor for anyone over 130 kg. That is an operator’s cautious wording, not a law, but it is the only page that says it so plainly. Its “know before you go” section also says you must be at least 10 years old, while another line lets children over 4 join with an adult, so the page contradicts itself on age: ask before you book for a child. It also names Frade’s Cave, a karst cave on the route.

The one with the transfer from Lisbon. The €40 listing from Vertente Natural gives two durations on the same page: “3 hours” in the summary and, in the description, about 2 to 3 hours on the water or about 7 hours in all with the transfer. If you choose the transfer, arrival in Sesimbra is before 9:30 am, the paddle starts at 10:00 am and the return leaves at 2:30 pm. Check which option you are booking.

The odd one out: the transparent kayak

The transparent kayak tour is a different trip. It starts at Praia do Creiro, on the Setúbal side of the park, not in Sesimbra, takes two hours and costs €55. The plan is 40 minutes to Galapinhos beach, 40 minutes there for a swim or snorkel, and 30 minutes back, in a kayak whose hull you can see through. It has only 30 reviews (5.0) but is the better choice for a short outing. Its page excludes children under 6, wheelchair users, non-swimmers and people with mobility impairments. It does not go to Ribeira do Cavalo and does not pass the Sesimbra caves.

Which should you pick?

  • First time on the sea, want the safest bet: the €35 tour, with the morning slot.
  • Want to spend as little as possible: the €31.50 tour, with a smaller snack and no meal.
  • Want a real lunch and smaller groups: the 4-hour small-group tour, from Sesimbra or with the Lisbon transfer.
  • Travelling with a child under 8: not the €37 tour, which excludes them, and not the transparent kayak (under 6). The other pages state no minimum age, so ask the operator before you pay. The €35 page only says that children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Short on time or want to snorkel: the transparent kayak.

What can go wrong

Sea and wind decide. The €31.50 page says in plain words that the tour “is subject to sea and weather conditions”, and a reviewer of another tour had their day cancelled and was offered an e-bike ride instead. That one was a good outcome, but you should plan a spare day. All five pages show free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. Kayaking is also tiring for people unused to it, and one reviewer reported mild seasickness. If you want a quieter way to see this coast with someone else steering, the boat trips from Sesimbra and the dolphin watching trips cover the same water.

Bring swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a refillable bottle, which is more or less the shared packing list. The full set of options, including the Lisbon departures, is on our kayak tours in Arrábida page. If you only book one, make it the €35 tour and take the morning slot.
