Hiking in the Arrábida Natural Park: Which Guided Walk Is Worth It?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

For most people, book the guided hike in the Arrábida Natural Park: it costs €40 per person, covers 6 to 8 km with a maximum climb of about 130 metres, is rated 4.8 from 29 reviews and includes lunch or brunch. There are two alternatives if you want something easier or something much harder, and they have a very different amount of evidence behind them.

What walking in Arrábida is like

Arrábida is a mountain range that rises directly above the sea, inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve. That is the reason to hike here rather than just drive past the viewpoints: you get the sea and the mountain in one view. Some trails are gentle valley paths, others run along the cliffs. A guide adds local explanation and, on the longer routes, transport that you do not have to organise yourself.

Only one page gives an age limit: the booking page of the easy loop with bays (below) lists children under 8 as not suitable. None of the pages says its hike is suitable for children, so ask the operator if you plan to bring any.

The half-day hike, €40. This is a guided walk led by a local who explains the plants, geology and history. The page says medium difficulty, 6 to 8 km, and a maximum ascent and descent of about 130 metres, with the hike itself taking about 2 to 3 hours. The 7-hour end of the range includes a round-trip transfer from Lisbon, so check which option you choose. The page lists a local guide, personal accident insurance and lunch or brunch. Pets and open-toed shoes are not allowed, and you must give the names and dates of birth of everyone in the group for the insurance. One reviewer found the trail “flat and easy” and the valleys beautiful in spring; another liked that the guide carried a book to check facts about plants. Keep in mind that the same page calls the difficulty “medium”, so those two descriptions do not match perfectly.

The coastal hike to the dinosaur footprints, €104. This is the long one: 5 to 7 hours, with hotel pickup included from Lisbon, Setúbal and Sesimbra meeting points. It starts at Bicas Beach and follows the rugged west coast towards Cabo Espichel, with a short mindfulness stop at a secluded beach. The page promises a hidden beach and the dinosaur footprints, which it describes as more than 150 million years old; a university news page we used for our Cabo Espichel guide gives about 129 million years, so treat the figure on the booking page as approximate. Food and drinks are not included. The page excludes pregnant women, people with back problems and people with heart problems. One reviewer called it “challenging but quite manageable with a reasonable level of fitness”, with some tough steep parts, and said the sea was lovely for swimming.

The easy loop with bays and Roman ruins, €45. Run by the WIND sports centre from Praia do Creiro, this is described as an 8 km walk of 2.5 to 3 hours, with a highest point of 115 m and “easy” technical difficulty, on the Setúbal side of the park. The route passes Alpertuche bay, the Lapa de Santa Margarida cave, Portinho da Arrábida and the beaches of Coelhos and Galapinhos, and visits the ruins of a Roman villa dating from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Bathrooms, showers and lockers are available. It has no reviews yet, which is the honest reason it is not our first pick, even though the description is the most detailed of the three.

Walking without a guide

Not every walk has to be booked. Portuguese hiking sites describe the Calhau da Cova trail, which runs on the southern slope of the Serra da Achada near Sesimbra to a secluded cove that once sheltered the town’s fishing boats, and coastal paths between Sesimbra and Cabo Espichel. We have not walked these paths, and have not checked their length, signage or whether they are open, so use a current map and a local report before you go. The beach at Ribeira do Cavalo can also be reached on foot, as described in our guide to the beach by kayak or on foot. That one is a steep descent and the sources disagree on how hard it is.

Practical points

  • Footwear. The half-day hike bans open-toed shoes, and the coastal hike lists hiking shoes. Wear closed shoes with grip.
  • Water and food. The coastal hike does not include food or drinks; bring both.
  • Weather and cancellation. All three pages show free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
  • Seasons. One reviewer saw spring flowers on the half-day hike; another did the coastal hike with a swim. We could not find sources for how hot or wet each month is on these trails, so we do not give a best month.

Which should you pick?

  • A manageable day with a guide and a meal: the €40 half-day hike.
  • A full day, a proper climb and the footprints: the €104 coastal hike, if you are fit and have no back or heart problems.
  • An easy walk with Roman ruins and a swim stop at the beaches: the €45 loop, accepting that it has no reviews.

If you would rather see this coast from the water, the kayak tours and adventure tours cover the same stretch. If you only book one, make it the €40 guided hike.
